Born on July 29th 1987, Nishard attended the prestigious Presentation College in San Fernando, Trinidad before going on to achieve a Bachelor’s Degree in Geomatics Engineering from the University of the West Indies. Although he didn’t come from a musical background, it was in his earlier days, at the Avocat Vedic School that his love for music coupled with the encouragement of his family, schoolmates and teachers led him to enter the Children of Mastana competition in 1996. He was the youngest competitor in the finals and was overwhelmingly voted the people’s choice winner. It was there and then that Nishard had the opportunity to meet young Kris Persad (KI) and Neval Chatelal. Little did they know that meeting would blossom into one of the greatest musical relationships years later.
At the tender age of 8, Nishard was already performing his Bollywood love songs on the biggest stages, tugging at heartstrings all across Trinidad and even the United States. He performed with the Choti Sangeet Orchestra of Point Fortin, Trinidad for a while and then the Dil Ki Awaaz band out of Penal. He even taught himself to play the keyboards, which is no easy feat. For the years to follow, he performed as a solo artist, a “one man band,” if you may, accompanying himself on the keyboards and thrilling crowds with his youthful and seemingly natural talent.
It was in his second year of university that he grabbed the attention of the popular D. Rampersad Indi Art Orchestra and soon became the lead singer for the band. As fate would have it, after years of not seeing each other, Nishard and Kris met up again, working on two separate tracks, with two separate bands in the same studio. It wasn’t long before they combined their efforts on the popular track “Om Shanti Om,” and he was officially invited to be a part of the 3veni family after accompanying the band on a very successful tour of the Netherlands in 2008.
Today, he has come a long way from the Bollywood singer he started off as. He is now one of the most versatile and dynamic entertainers in the crossover game and has travelled the world extensively with the 3veni band over the past 7 years. Many may not know, but Nishard is one of the very few local artistes who can boast of writing all his own songs, which are all original melodies created by himself. He is also in the process of putting together his own studio to showcase his talents as a producer as well. Asked about his journey over the past few years with 3veni, Nishard explains, “It has been one of the greatest learning experiences of my life and I feel blessed to be a part of such an immensely talented team.”
In 2012, his breakout original song, “Totin Feelings,” was well received and thrust him into the spotlight. More recently, Nishard placed 5th in the 2014 Chutney Soca Monarch competition as a first time finalist with his hit single, “Mammy Say.” He plans to continue taking Trinidad & Tobago’s culture all over the world, and aims to capture the Chutney Soca Monarch title in the very near future.
