As a young girl growing up in the Caribbean island of Trinidad & Tobago, Brooklyn born Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter Angela Hunte was surrounded by an abundance of music representing different cultures and generations. The genre-blurring soundtrack of Angela’s early teen years established the broad-based sonic palette that characterizes her professional versatility. Angela spent many years working on her craft, collaborating with producer Salaam Remi (The Fugees, Nas, Amy Winehouse). Together, they tailored a sound and style for her. During their writing process, he soon realized that she was not just a songwriter, but a true artist, with a style of writing and a very unique voice that puts her in a league of her own.
During a writing trip to London, feeling homesick, Angela wanted to write a song about her beloved city New York. That day she co-wrote, and co-produced “Empire State of Mind”, by Jay Z featuring Alicia Keys. “Empire” stayed on top of the Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks, won two Grammys and sold 6 million copies in the U.S. It also became the theme song for the New York Yankees’ 2009 World Series win. Angela continued her journey as a hitmaker, and then labels kept asking, “Who is that voice on the demo?” Producers began to keep Angela on the songs, and many of them, stemming from the DJ world featured her on their work. This sound quickly became music’s newest evolution, and she began to build lasting relationships with Diplo, Magnetic Man and DJ Buddha to name a few. Diplo recruited Angela for the Snoop Lion project “Reincarnated” where she was a featured artist contributing to a large portion of the album. Angela also went on to be the first female to write and be a featured on the highly acclaimed indie band Slightly Stoopid.
In 2015 Angela went back to her roots of the Caribbean and teamed up with “Soca King” Machel Montano, writing their massive global hit ” Party Done.” The success of this record and her follow up 2016 hit “Mon Bon Ami,” is allowing her to reach new fans around the globe.
